Let's start with an overview of this industry and its product.

Types of sign work

You need only take a look at one block of any business district to realize how much sign work is out there. The businesses that need signs range from mom-and pop, local businesses to multi-national corporations. According to the Internal Revenue Service, there are over 22 million small businesses alone in the US. Each year there are nearly one million new small-business startups.

Most signs are custom products, designed and fabricated to fit the customer's needs. They must deliver a specific, unique message and be made to certain specifications that are determined by location, size, etc. The customer provides the message the sign must deliver and other basic specifications. The sign shop creates a sign that meets the customer's advertising or informational needs within a certain budget.

There is also a considerable amount of sign work that is produced in quantity for volume users such as chain stores, banks and fast-food restaurants. These signs are often produced by shops that specialize in volume work. Let's begin with an overview of the types of work common in US sign shops:

Architectural signs: These are the directional and informational sign systems that are used in buildings-airports, hospitals, office buildings-to direct the public. They begin with the main identification signs and continue right through directories, directional signs and door signs.

Banners: These are one of the most popular types of promotional signs-lettering and graphics on a fabric panel designed to be suspended indoors or out.

Dimensional signs: This term is used for signs that use cutout letters, or are carved, routed or sandblasted to provide dimension. This type of sign is becoming more common, thanks to affordable, computer-driven routers.

Electric signs: In the trade, any sign that is illuminated from within is considered an electric sign. Electric signs usually have a plastic face and are illuminated using fluorescent tubes. This category also includes backlit awnings, which look like conventional awnings by day, but are made with a translucent fabric that is illuminated from within at night.

Flat surface: There are any number of flat substrates that are used for signs-plywood, acrylic and PVC sheets, aluminum and more. Lettering is typically cut from vinyl film or applied using paints.

Individual letters: Many storefronts and other signs are done using individual letters that are formed or cut from plastics or metals. The letters are often manufactured by companies that specialize in letter production and wholesale the product to sign shops.

Neon: The glass tube that is used for neon signs is bent by hand. Besides being used in the form of letters and graphics, neon is used inside individual letters (which are called channel letters ) to provide illumination.

Outdoor advertising: This is the term for roadside billboards and other types of off-premise advertising such as bus stop enclosures.

Screen printing: The screen process is used to print graphics on a broad range of materials from T-shirts to bottles. It is used for signs that are needed in quantity, such as real estate and political signs, or clothing.

Vehicle lettering: This ranges from the lettering on the local florist's delivery van to fleets of large tractor-trailers that use four-color graphics. These different types of signs are used for a variety of purposes by businesses of all sizes. Consider these examples: A small office complex and a major hospital both need an architectural sign system. A 10-unit shopping center and a Las Vegas casino both need electrical signs. In many cases, the same sign shop would service both of these customers.

Types of sign shops

Most sign shops fall into one of five categories: full service, commercial, quick sign, corporate/government sign departments, or shops with a specialty.

Commercial sign shops produce a broad range of signs from banners to small electric signs. Storefront signs, vinyl and painted signs, dimensional wood signs and vehicle lettering are all common work in these shops. Most have a computer system for designing signs, cutting vinyl graphics and making patterns. This group makes up the largest number of sign shops. They are typically owner operated with 1 to 5 employees. Husband/wife teams are not uncommon. What these shops can't produce in-house is often subcontracted out or bought from a wholesaler-many shop owners are reluctant to send customers away for some of their sign needs for fear they won't come back in the future.

Full-service shops produce and service electric signs, often along with the same types of non-electric signs done by the commercial shop. Full-service shops are typically equipped with a crane truck, sheet-metal equipment, and may have inhouse neon tube bending capabilities. Staff size is typically 5 to 50. Some large electric sign shops do only large sign projects and service of electric signs. Electric signs require routine maintenance and repairs, so service work is a significant part of electric sign work.

Quick sign shops (sometimes called instant sign shops) produce only vinyl signs and lettering with an emphasis on fast turnaround. They are usually located in a retail store setting. Franchises are available for this type of shop.

Corporations, institutions & government agencies often have in-house sign departments. These usually handle two or three types of sign work that the parent organization uses most often. A corporate sign shop, for example, may do displays, presentations, nameplates, fleet graphics, etc., in-house and use outside sources for all other work.

Outdoor advertising companies specialize in billboards and large roadside bulletins. They create and install the graphics on the boards, and often work with the firms that coordinate nationwide advertising programs. Many of the outdoor advertising companies are national concerns.

Specialty shops have a “niche market” and specialize in a certain type of sign work such as architectural signs, vehicle lettering or banners.
